Men in the U. S. who are taking prescription drugs such as Viagra should know that they may face an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, the Food and Drug Administration warned on Tuesday.
A total of 5,066,543 people — the largest of the nation’s 5.1 million people — were prescribed the drug in the United States, the first time FDA-approved treatment has been available for people ages 65 and over.
The agency noted that the drug could be used in patients who are already taking nitroglycerin. The drug also is used to treat high blood pressure, which can cause heart attacks or strokes in some people.
“This matter is concerning because it may lead to dangerous increases in the risk of heart attacks and strokes in patients who are taking prescription-strength nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin) or other drugs that lower blood pressure,” said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb on Tuesday.
“The FDA is continuing to study this matter and will monitor the situation closely to ensure safety,” Gottlieb said.
The drug has also been studied for other uses, including heart attack prevention and stroke prevention.
The FDA also issued a warning to physicians about the risk of having serious side effects from taking the drug.
The drug is also being used in children as a preventive measure to prevent heart attack in people with high blood pressure, and in children with a rare inherited eye condition called retinitis pigmentosa.
According to the drug’s label, it is not approved for use in children under 18 years of age.
“Sudden hearing loss, tinnitus and dizziness, and chest pain are all possible adverse events that can occur with use of the drug,” the FDA said.
The agency added that it is “notifying all physicians, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals, as well as health care providers and patients that this medication may be potentially associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke.”
The FDA also warned about the use of the drug for purposes other than those listed on the drug’s label.
For instance, an FDA-approved prescription drug for erectile dysfunction may cause heart attack and stroke in some men. The FDA also warned about an interaction between Viagra and a drug called sildenafil.
The agency also warned about the potential increased risk of stroke in people taking high blood pressure medications, including nitrates, to prevent them from having a heart attack or stroke.

Canada's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday said it has approved Viagra (sildenafil) tablets for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men. The medication, manufactured by Pfizer Inc., is used to treat men with erectile dysfunction. Viagra will be available in Canada in the spring.
Viagra is a generic version of Cialis®. The FDA approved the drug in 2003 for its use to treat erectile dysfunction.
Health Canada also has the drug in Canada for a new condition in people with type 2 diabetes. A new drug will be approved in Canada in 2016 for treating diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
“The Canadian Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the approval of Viagra, a generic medication for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, for the treatment of diabetes,” the FDA said in a statement.
In June, Health Canada said it will begin reviewing its approval of Viagra.
Health Canada’s statement follows that of the FDA in 2012, in which the drug was first approved for treatment of erectile dysfunction in men.
